If you’re ready to try skateboarding for your very first time, then there are a few things you should know. First of all, the skateboarding equipment is not available for fashion- it serves a purpose. The first thing you should be sure to buy or borrow is a good helmet. Even if you see others at the skate park whizzing by without headgear, it’s not weak or stupid to wear your own.
It’s also very important to get a pair of skate shoes. While it’s possible to skate in regular shoes, skate shoes are designed especially with safety in mind. They have a wide, flat bottom that grips the board better, and they are reinforced in the right places to keep the shoe from wearing down.
While protective pads won’t always be necessary, it’s definitely a good idea to wear them when you’re beginning, and then again when you’re attempting tricks for the first time. You might feel stupid or conspicuous, but rolling around on the ground with a broken elbow can make you look pretty stupid and conspicuous as well.
Once you’ve got all the necessary protective gear, it’s a good idea to read up on how to fall safely. Your equipment is there to prevent major injuries, but a bit of practice in falling without using your hands or knees to catch yourself could save you a lot of time in the emergency room. You’ll learn where best to catch the impact from a fall and how to roll your body to avoid a concentrated blow.
When you’re ready to step on the board, make sure that you’re in a quiet area with a smooth surface. It will be hard enough finding your balance without worrying about other skaters, pedestrians, or pesky gravel that can throw off your balance. There’s no shame in getting it right before taking your board to the skate park.
