Most people associate the idea of a catheter with a long tube that actually goes inside the bladder to help it drain, but there is actually a type of catheter that works on the outside of the body. This is called, obviously, and external catheter, and it only works for men. This kind of catheter is used in many different types of situations, and it is especially used for men who are severely incontinent or who are too hurt or sick to use the toilet or a bedpan.

Knowing that the external catheter is also called a condom catheter can help you understand how it works. Basically, the top part of the catheter is made from a plastic-like material like a condom, and most of them are latex-free since latex allergies are becoming quite common. The catheters come in different sizes so that they fit properly, and they usually have a slightly tacky substance on the inside that holds them in place.

The condom part of the external catheter is fitted snugly over the urethra, and if the catheter fits correctly, leakage is very unusual. The catheter is connected by a rubber tube to a bag that is either strapped to the leg or hung at the side of the bed for overnight use.

Just like a normal catheter, the parts of an external catheter should be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent infection and general smell. Also, external catheters are only meant for short-term use because long-term use can cause damage to the urethra and increases a man’s risk of contracting a urinary infection, which is not at all pleasant.

These types of catheters can be bought just about anywhere, and you don’t need a prescription to buy them. Do, though, talk with your doctor if you’re struggling with incontinence, and be sure to read the instructions that come with the catheter so that you use it properly.
